IEC Welcomes Senator Dan Patrick and Helena Brown

On November 16, 2011, IEC was proud to welcome two distinguished leaders that support IEC and the interests of its members.The IEC November General Meeting featured State Senator Dan Patrick as guest speaker, along with Helena Brown, Candidate for Houston City Council District A.Senator Patrick provided an insightful update on legislative issues, including how the legislature cut and balanced the state budget.

Senator Patrick also spoke of the importance of political involvement, specifically commending that of IEC member Clyde Bryan who ran for Houston City Council District G and Helena Brown, an IEC Gulf Coast PAC supported candidate, who is the frontrunner in a runoff for Houston City Council District A.Senator Patrick answered a members question about the state franchise tax and said that there is never any guarantee against higher taxes on business.The only way to prevent that is by electing strong fiscal conservatives to the state legislature.In remarks directed at IEC supported candidate Helena Brown, Senator Dan Patrick said "You are running for all of the right reasons."

In her comments, Ms. Brown thanked IEC members for their support and credited them with her success on election night.In the November 8 election, Helena Brown won 47% of the vote against incumbent Brenda Stardig's 41%, and Bob Schoellkopf's 11%.In the December 10 runoff election, Brown has the endorsement of third candidate Bob Schoellkopf, former council members Toni Lawrence and Bruce Tatro, Former Tax assessor Paul Bettencourt, and the IEC Texas Gulf Coast PAC, among others.Among issues in this race, are the 150 city permits and fee increases, co-authored or sponsored by incumbent Councilmember Stardig.
